Magna Carta at Sotheby's
One of the most important exhibitions ever for Sotheby's was that of the Magna Carta. The venue was the imposing 10th floor gallery in Sotheby's New York building. The brief was to transform the large space into a sanctum for the display of the original document enabling the 1297 parchment to take centre stage. Powerful extracts from the text were printed onto silk banners flanking the passage into the main chamber with dramatic lighting drawing visitors into the room. The octagonal space was created using fabric panels printed with calligraphy from the original document. Following the exhibition, the Magna Carta sold for over $20m.
