NEW YEAR DISPLAY DESIGN - 2018
The New Year gives opportunity to celebrate the past of The Goldsmiths' Company's history, beginning with the celebration of the Jacques Cartier Memorial Awards and also the rich history of hallmarks with the book release of Silversmiths in Elizabethan and Stuart London: Their Lives and Their Marks by author and researcher Dr David M. Mitchell.
Cartier is a long-standing principal patron of the Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council, and has sponsored the Jacques Cartier Memorial Award since 1958.
The Award is granted if all criteria meets perfection or comes close; and so only through the 59 years running, only 38 awards have been given out.
The display had to represent a timeless space, where the objects varied in style and would be able to have coherence, in reflection of the finest craftsmanship. We took influence from the 50s post-modern design of minimalist architectural materials. Therefore each object could speak for itself, through their history and also their maker's skill.

Inspiration drew from the hallmarks and beaten metal, as the rough texture of the paper emulates the detailed, decorative hallmarks. The use of color softens the cream display and pays tribute to the Elizabethan colors used in fashion and tapestry.
